likely to forget. all right, take a nice deep breath, it's friday. welcome to your weekend almost, and to hln "news and views." sit back, relax, and let us get you informed. this is a story a lot of people are talking about today. the philadelphia eagles making it official. about an hour ago the team announced they signed disgraced quarterback michael vick to a one-year deal with an option for a second year. now, remember, vick spent 18 months in prison on federal dogfighting charges. larry smith is in philadelphia right now. clearly, the team is hoping this is going to be the beginning of a turnaround for i guess for them and for him, but i have to wonder what the fans are thinking. >> well, you know, we really don't know, christi. before i start, since you mentioned the fans, let me show you this. this morning's "philadelphia daily news" the headline telling everyone, michael vick is coming, hide your dogs. michael vick knows this is the kind of thing he will be facing throughout the rest of his nfl career which now will resume

with the philadelphia eagles. ed wothe word inside, everybody deserves a second chance. the number one draft pick in the nfl being introduced and flanked by his new head coach andy reid and tony dungy who has served as a mentor for vick as he made the transition from prison back into civilian life and now to the nfl. michael vick talked about the decisions he made that landed him in hot water and temporarily interrupted his career. >> i was wrong for what i did. e everything that happened at that point in time in my life was wrong and it was unnecessary and to this day i can't understand why i was involved in such pointless activity, and why did i risk so much at the pinnacle of my career, and i was naive to a lot of things, but i figure if i can help more animals than i hurt, then, you know, i'm contributing, i'm doing my part.

>> it was those injured dogs that got eagles owner jeffrey lury fired up afterwards after the trio left, including michael vick. he minced no words in talking about his disdain for vick's actions and said it was the words of dungy, reid, and nfl commissioner roger goodell that helped him in his soul searching when he made his decision to sign michael vick. vick will play the final two preseason game but will not play in a regular season game until probably as late as week six. the league will decide when they will lift the suspension and allow him to take the field. when they do, we will see him take a lot of different positions and play a lot of different roles for the eagles on offense as they try to get to the super bowl joosm. >> you know, i have to wonder whether his apology, a lot of people wondering if it was authentic enough, contrite enough to get people to cheer him on. >> well, i think that's in the

minds of each person, each fan, each individual. certainly what we heard today from jeffrey lury, he mentioned his disdain for what had happened. people who have talked to michael vick, andy reid, tony dungy, roger goodell, all have said they do feel he has shown contrition, andy reid believes in second chances as well. the philadelphia eagles coach has seen two sons arrested on drug charges. he looked at michael vick and thought about his sons and their second chances. jeffrey lury said there are no third chances and michael vick understand that. >> let me ask you quickly, can you walk us through this deal? how much money is involved here? >> well, it's a two-year contract. one year with an option for a second. the total money being reported is a little over $7 million. though none of it is guaranteed. this is for someone who was at one time the highest paid player in the nfl. >> $7 million still sounds like an awful lot of money for two

married to him. fromme is now 60. she was just 26 years old when she pointed a semi-automatic handgun at gerald ford back in 1975. that gun is on display at the gerald ford museum, in fact. well, drew peterson wants his murder trial moved out of will county, illinois. and today in court his attorneys are asking the judge to order a change of venue. they claim peterson can't get a fair trial due to the, quote, extensive and inflammatory media coverage of the case. but the judge may not agree. both peterson and his attorney, joel brodsky, have talked extensively to the press, willingly. peterson is a former bolingbrook police sergeant. he's charged in the death of his third wife, kathleen savio. his fourth wife still has not been found. new video has surfaced showing the plane and helicopter hitting each other over the hudson river last saturday. please let me forewarn you here, it's disturbing video to watch because you realize what's happening. it could help, however, explain what caused the crash. now, take a look here as you see -- we're going to see the

helicopter. there it is, and then the small plane appears and clips the chopper's rotor blade. listen to some of the reaction from the people on the boat who noticed this. a wing there fell off as well. so this originally aired on nbc nightly news. it was taken by a man practicing with his new camera on a boat tour. nine people died in that collision and now two air-traffic controllers have been suspended by the faa. the agency says one controller was on the phone with his girlfriend after the plane's takeoff and during the accident as well. his supervisor wasn't even in the building as required apparently. now, the faa does not think their actions contributed to the accident, but one expert says there's a lot riding on how it handles this investigation. >> we have somebody missing in action. there's someone else who is not doing their job, so the negligence is there. the only question is whether that negligence had a role in

this accident. the faa is already saying, well, maybe it didn't, but the faa stands to lose millions and millions of dollars, the taxpayers do, if the faa is wrong. >> a source also tell it's us the controller who was put on leave is a long-time employee. he and his supervisor could face disciplinary actions including being fired. and the first casualty of the 1991 gulf war is finally laid to rest. navy pilot michael scott speicher was buried this morning 18 years after he was shot down over iraq. here is the procession. his remains were found just last month buried in central iraq. thousands of people lined jacksonville streets to pay tribute as speicher's funeral procession passed as you see there. and friends and family are remembering eunice kennedy shriver at a private funeral in hyannis, massachusetts, today. her daughter, maria shriver, and son-in-law, governor arnold schwarzenegger were two of the family members carrying the casket into the church.

vips oprah winfrey, jon bon j i bon jovi, vice president joe biden among the guests there. edward kennedy is not there. remember, he's fighting brain cancer. we understand these are live pictures of everybody congregating outside the church after that mass. shriver died tuesday at the age of 88 and, remember, she founded the special olympics. california fire officials, live pictures coming to you here, say two structures have been damaged by a large fire in the santa cruz mountains. they say they don't yet know what type of structures they were. more firefighters and equipment though are expected today. the lockheed fire, as it's being called, is only 5% contained and 2,000 residents have been forced to leave their homes. look at all the smoke that's being emitted there. the fire has been burning since wednesday.

it's a very rural, rugged terrain, but it's already affected by drought. so it's really fueling these flames. aerosmith front man steven tyler admits he zigged when he should have zagged. he's joke being it now obviously, but last week's fall from a stage is worse than anybody thought. what it means for the band's summer tour. if you have tickets, stick around.

potassium, and selenium, which have been shown to protect your heart. williams says don't beat yourself up if you miss a color. >> making sure you get a variety is the important thing. to get five colors every day. it's not really necessary. >> reporter: for today's health minute, i'm dr. sanjay gupta. olympic gold medalist michael phelps was in a car accident last night. he and his two passengers weren't hurt but the driver of the other vehicle was shaken up and went to the hospital as a precaution. phelps' black escalade collided with that vehicle around -- well, it was late last night. police say alcohol wasn't a factor in the accident. in fact, no one even got a ticket although the crash is still under investigation. and basketball coach rick pitino will keep his job at the university of louisville. university president james ramsey says pitino publicly apologized for having an affair with a woman six years ago and it's time to move on. the woman is now charged in federal court for trying to extort money from pitino.

pitino says he plans to remain at louisville for as long as the university wants him. well, if you had a ticket, i'm sorry to tell you aerosmith has canceled the rest of its summer tour. lead singer steven tyler fell off the stage at a show in south dakota last week. he broke his shoulder and had to get 20 stitches in his head, so his doctors have advised him to stay home and recuperate. guitarist joe perry says words cannot express the sadness he feels for having to cancel the tour at this point. he says he does hope to be back on the road as soon as possible though and the band says it will refund tickets for all those canceled shows. i don't know if you have one, but you're probably disappointed, too. a man walks in a convenience store pointing a gun. he has no idea what he's gotten himself into. how the store owners fought back against an armed robber.

a key group of senators has apparently dropped an end of life counseling provision in the health care reform bill. this would have paid doctors to spend time talking with their patients about advanced directives like living wills and hospice care options. sarah palin claims the idea would lead to, in her words, death panels. iowa senator chuck grassley says the provision is now off the table because it could be misinterpreted and implemented incorrectly. the provision is still though in the three house versions we should point out.

>> costco agreed the dolls could potentially offend customers and they've pulled them from the store's shelves. there's a good sign out today that inflation is keeping in check. the government says over the past year consumer prices fell just over 2%. that's the biggest drop in nearly 60 years and it's mostly due to a large dip in energy prices. last month the consumer price index remained flat after rising slightly in june. now, if you're having trouble paying your mortgage, don't trust just anyone to help you out. hln money expert clark howard says some troubled homeowners are actually getting ripped off. >> we have a big percent of the american people who are upside down in their mortgages owing more on their homes than what they're worth. we also have a lot of people in that situation who have fallen behind on their mortgages. everywhere you turn it seems there are people promoting that they are going to help you

health care crisis, i really do. do i believe that the government needs to be more involved? no, because i think that they just -- whenever they get their fingers in the pot it kind of just turns black. >> reporter: a common sentiment here where a second obama voter told us government is too big. >> we've just spent so much money on the stimulus and the t.a.r.p. then we're going to add another huge entitlement in the form of the public option. >> reporter: the movie "a river runs through it" was filmed near here, so people love their fly fishing. all part of the rugged individualism. >> i think the west is all about independence and do it my way and i don't need anyone to tell me what and how to do, and i think when government gets too involved in our lives, there's some discomfort. >> reporter: but they're comfortable with the federal government at the local clinic known as community health partners. taxpayers pick up 50% of the $4 million annual budget. >> we're able to provide health

care to someone who walks through the door regardless of their ability to pay. >> reporter: which brings us back to sonja mcdonald who wants more of these clinics around the country, even when we told her the feds pick up much of the tab. >> the government being involved is fine. it's just that when we try and overstep, when they try and say, no, this is what needs to be done. >> reporter: so you can see part of the president's challenge really in making this sales pitch is trying to convince people, the federal government is already heavily involved in health care whether it's clinics, helping the poorest of the poor in states like montana here, or medicare a very popular federal program for senior citizens. i tell you top white house aides tell me they realize that after all the federal bailouts, people are wary, they're distrustful of the federal government, but they say the president is not going to give in. he's going to have the town hall meeting in montana. then in colorado tomorrow, and that's why, christi, i decided to get ready for the occasion with a stetson. >> you look like you are right at home, my friend. and the thing is you're there and it looks so peaceful and

in 1975, by the way, is on display at the gerald ford museum. drew peterson wants his murder trial moved out of will county, illinois. at an hearing later today his attorneys will order a change of venue do to all the pretrial publicity. the judge is proceeding as though the trial will remain in will county, which is just west of chicago. and he's asking 240 potential jurors to fill out questionnaires. drew peterson is the former bolingbrook police officer charged in the death of his third wife and suspected in the disappearance of his fourth wife, stacy. a key group of senators has apparently dropped an end of life counseling provision in the health care reform bill. it would have paid doctors to spend time talking with their patients about advance directives like living wills and hospice care options, but sarah palin claimed the idea would lead to, in her words, death panels. iowa chuck grassley said that provision is off the table

negligence had a role in this accident. the faa is already saying maybe it didn't but the faa could stand to lose millions of dollars or the taxpayers do if the faa is wrong. >> a source tells us the controller who was put on leave is a long-time employer. he and the supervisor could face disciplinary action including being terminated. thousands of people line the streets of jacksonville, florida, to pay tribute to the first casualty of the world war. scott speicher was buried this morning. his remains were only found last month buried in central iraq. today's funeral procession included a stop at a veterans war monument and the jacksonvil jacksonville's office fired a 12-gun salute. eunice shriver's daughter maria shriver and arnold schwarzenegger were but two of the family members carrying the casket into the church. vips, oprah winfrey and jon bon

jovi and shriver's brother, senator eduard kennedy is not in attendance. he is battling brain cancer. shriver died tuesday at the age of 88. california fire officials say two structures had been damaged by a large wildfire burning in the santa cruz mountains. they say they don't yet know what type of structures they were. more firefighters and more equipment are headed there today. the lockheed fire is only 5% contained. 2,000 residents have been forced to leave their homes. the fire has been burning since wednesday in very rural and rugged terrain already affected by drought. a man walks into a convenience store and pulls out a gun and points at the clerk but he has no idea what he's gotten himself in to. how the store owners fought back against the armed robber.

they're trying to get as much out of the properties as they can to benefit the people that madoff swindled. the three properties worth more than $12 million. a rhode island mother accused of strangling her 8-month-old daughter to death is accuse of murder. the little girl is confined to a wheelchair, but police did not say why. she did not enter a plea during yesterday's hearing, she was ordered held without bail. she strangled the daughter in their home on monday and the father found her inthe next morning. they will hold a news conference later today. fbi agents are helping local police in oakland search for a 5-year-old boy who's been missing since monday. campbell reported he disappeared from his foster father's car when it was reported outside a shoe store where his aunt and foster parent is employed. he left the boy in the car and went to unlock the store door.

the couple was arrested yesterday and charged with child endangerment and simple assault. the couple has been under investigation since the boy's natural father noticed bruises. olympic gold medalist michael phelps is okay after a car wreck last night. phelps and his two passengers were unhurt. the driver of the other vehicle was shaken up and went to the hospital as a precaution. she was at fault but not said whether they issued any citation. phelps' black esccollide collided with that vehicle around 9:00 eastern last night. police say alcohol was not a factor in the accident. costco pulls a doll from its shelves after a customer complained its message was anything but cute and cuddly.

conspiracy and running a dog fighting ring. he was conditionally reinstated to the nfl after serving 18 months in a federal prison. both supporters and opponents of the newest philadelphia eagle showed up in force outside the training facility. there was some contentious debate between the two sides about the decision to sign michael vick. the animal rights group peta is not happy with this decision to give michael vick a second chance. here's part of their statement "peta and millions of decent football fans around the world are disappointed that the eagles decided to sign a guy who hung dogs from trees and electrocuted them with jumper cables and held them under water. peta hopes vick has learned his lesson and remorseful for his crimes." we'll talk with sports attorney ivan goal. talk about the risks and the rewards. >> believe me, the philadelphia eagles are quite excited like they said. michael vick at one time was the

than scheduled? >> no, he has to sit out the first four games. that's a problem for the eagles, but once game four is done he'll be back and play. suspension has already been set up by the commissioner under the player conduct policy that he has to sit another four games in addition to the two years, which is unprecedented, unprecedented but vick will be back at the 16-game season and plus playoffs and vick needs the time to get reacclimated and he can jump in in game five and by the last third of the season he will be a major contributor and if something happens to donovan mcnabb, if something happens to him and he gets injured, then vick may be starting and would play and wouldn't it be a story if he led the philadelphiaege tools the super bowl championship. >> of course, it would. what about the philly fans make them work? >> they're rav udfans. they love their sports. their hockey, football,

scene michael vick figures to see quite a bit. protesters sitting outside the eagles training facility here protesting the team's signing him. michael vick, that 18-month sentence. he should get ready for that. even this morning's "philadelphia daily news" the headline reading "hide your dogs." a picture of michael vick as he tries to rebound the transgressions that cost him over $100 million with that massive contract he signed with the falcons. even eagle's owner jeffrey lurie made an emotional speech later. his talking about the soul searching he had to do to come to this decision. he's a dog lover and dog owner, and he said with michael vick he said i want to see the self-hatred in michael vick of what he did, but he said finally with the help of others he came to the decision he should sign michael vick and give him a second chance. >> a lot of people want to see that contrition, that contriteness in him. obviously, what we just heard there is he's saying his talents

are god given. you see a real humble version of vick. i'm wondering do you see a difference in him because you covered him when he was in atlanta. >> reporter: well, from a reporter's perspective and i was in the courthouse when he was sentenced to the 23-month prison term, he did seem more con tried toot. just from my opinion. someone who knows much more is tony dungy, the indianapolis colts head coach. he said, listen, the 18 months he spent behind bars gave him a chance to step back and get away from the friends and the posse and the whirlwind lifestyle of a superstar nfl quarterback and realize the things he did were wrong. he says right now he really sees a different michael vick. he said even right away when it was first known that he was talking to vick, he said ten falcons players of michael vick reached out to dungy and said tell him i said hi and give him my phone number and i'm really glad he's on the way back. >> obviously, has a lot of

morning 18 years after he was shot down over iraq. his remains were found last month buried in central iraq. now, today's funeral procession included a stop at a war veterans monument and the jacksonville sheriff's office fired a 21-gun salute. eunice kennedy shriver has been laid to rest at a cape cod cemetery. this is in a private service. her funeral mass was held a few hours ago in hyannis, massachusetts. you see shriver's daughter, maria shriver, and son-in-law arnold schwarzenegger. they were two of the family members, as you can see, carrying the casket into the church. shriver's brother, senator edward kennedy, did not attend. he's fighting brain cancer. but shriver died tuesday at the age of 88. let's go out west. california fire officials say two small structures have been damaged now by this large wildfire burning in the santa cruz mountains. they say they don't know yet what type of structures they were, but more firefighters and

right now closed as officials conduct this investigation, but the only thing florida highway patrol could say is that this is not a traffic or law enforcement shooting. but, again, the person appears to be inside that burgundy car that you see -- well, you did see that just a couple minutes ago. we'll keep you posted as soon as we hear some more information about it. thank you. we do want to talk about colonial bank because if it's your bank what do you need to know right now? poppy harlow has details from the cnnmoney.com newsroom in new york. for people who haven't heard there might be some issues with the bank today. >> this is a bank that is being looked at, i think it's fair to say, by regulators right now. a lot of questions over whether it will be taken over or not. dow jones reporting that b bb&tn the south which is another regional bank, could take over colonial, but there is no confirmation.

this comes on the heels of a federal judge saying colonial bank with its 355 branches across the south is on the, quote, brink of collapse. the judge froze the assets at colonial due to a dispute colonial is having with bank of america. this is really just the latest trouble for this bank. its mortgage lending and accounting practices are under federal investigation. it's one of two banks that were raided by federal agents earlier this month. >> put this into perspective. if colonial collapses, how large a failure are we talking about here? >> pretty sizable failure when you look through history. they've got about $25 billion in assets. you've got branches across five states in the south, across alabama, florida, georgia, nevada, and also texas. if it doesn't survive on its own, it would be the biggest bank failure of this year and the sixth largest in u.s. history. you see the list there. of course, the largest bank failure we've ever seen, that of washington mutual which happened

last year. this would come right after that 1980 failure of american savings and loan. >> so say if i'm a colonial customer, what do i need to know? >> don't panic and we're not trying to be alarmists here. we're telling you what's going on, but you don't want to panic because if regulators do shut this bank down, your deposits are pretty much protected. your atm card will still work. we have $250,000 per account that's protected by the fdic at colonial bank. that limit was raised from $100,000 last year remember when that happened during some of the height of the banking crisis. it's important to note there are situations when you can get even more insurance and that's what the fdic pointed out to us. if you have your individual account at a bank and a joint account with your spouse. one thing to look out for, if you have a business and your account is at a bank that may fail, you want to make sure that limit isn't above the $250,000 or if you have an i.r.a.

call the number on your screen for free information. we have a frightening situation to update you on now. you're looking at this car in broward county, florida, where the turnpike has been closed in both directions because of a traffic-related shooting, and it's fatal. both directions of the turnpike closed. this is near davey, but the victim appears to be inside the burgundy car you just saw there. what we know so far is the person was apparently shot and killed while driving, and that they were the only person in that car. the person apparently crashed into two other vehicles after being shot. no injuries reported in those vehicles involved in the accident, but one local affiliate reports it's an apparent case of road rage.

air-traffic controllers have been suspended by the faa. a source tells us one controller was talking on the phone with his girlfriend after the plane took off. during the accident he was on the phone. his supervisor was not in the building, which is required. but the faa says it doesn't believe those actions contributed to the accident. >> we have somebody missing in action. we have someone else who is not doing their job, so the negligence is there. the only question is whether that negligence had a role in this accident. the faa is already saying, well, maybe it didn't, but the faa stands to lose millions and millions of dollars, the taxpayers do, if the faa is wrong. >> a source also tells us the controller who was put on leave is a long-time employee. he and his supervisor could face disciplinary actions including being fired. michael phelps, know he smashed world records, well last night he smashed up his escalade. we'll have the latest about what we know on this accident.

that's where president teddy roosevelt was calling for universal health care. at that time there were no such things as paid sick days, maternity leave. 1943, president franklin roosevelt, he wanted a compulsory national health plan. congress shot him down. president johnson in '65 he signed medicaid and medicare programs into law. many people are still benefiting from those programs today. in 1979 president carter proposed a national health plan but did not get enough support in congress and, of course, we could take you to the clinton years, that's when hillary clinton, the first lady, was trying to do her own health care plan. didn't work out so much. so this is a long, long journey that many presidents have faced. some of them successful, christi, a lot of them not. >> looking at what president obama is proposing, break down for us what some of the sticking points of this plan are. >> so here are the points people have been discussing over the past few weeks. the first one is the government

option, right? it's been put out there a lot. the president has called it an exchange. basically this would be out there along with private insurers as an option. some people are for it because they say well then people who aren't insured could get in line and actually have some coverage. there are those who are opposing it who say it would compete against the plans you already have at work and therefore make it more difficult for you to have the kind of health care you want. another point is the mandate that would require all americans to be covered no matter what. about 46 million americans right now are uninsured. there's been the issue of an expansion of current programs like medicare and medicaid and the children's health insurance and of course there's regulation. should the government step in and regulate the private insurance market? democrats and republicans actually agree that insurance companies should not reject people with pre-existing conditions, and then one of the biggest sticking points, christi is cost. how are we going to pay for all this? is an individual who is making more than $280,000 or a family

well, michael jackson's doctor didn't know the singer had some, quote, very unusual problems. that's what dr. conrad murray's lawyer contends. he says when murray was hired, he wasn't aware of any specific

medications jackson needed or whether he had any addictions. he says since murray didn't perform drug tests, he had no way of knowing if the singer was taking medications on his own. now, murray was at jackson's home the day he died, and authorities have been investigating what drugs the doctor may have given him. they have searched murray's clinics in texas and las vegas. and taiwan's president says last weekend's devastating typhoons killed 500 people so far. 15,000 survivors though have been rescued from remote areas. among them a mother and newborn baby. some areas have been cut off by collapsed bridges and roads which buckled after days of torrential rains. rescuers are using helicopters to reach the worst hit areas. look at this close call for an emergency worker. that's who got caught in this raging floodwater. he was eventually rescued, but the typhoon dumped 80 inches of rain, that's six feet of water, on the island over the weekend.

because of a traffic-related shooting. this is being investigated by the police in davie. the person in the burgundy car were shot and killed while driving. all indications are only one person was inside. the car then crashed into two other vehicles. no word on whether any one of those vehicles was injured. a local affiliate reports it's an apparent case of road rage. authorities haven't confirmed that. this is near griffin road in davie florida, north of hollywood road. traffic is diverted off the turn pike in the area. he's vilified as a dog killer. now michael vick is returning to the football field. they've signed him to a one-year deal with an option for a second year. larry smith is in philadelphia where the eagles today held a press conference. larry? >> reporter: well, chuck, this is a man who was at one time the

cnn.com/impact and get the list of agencies providing help. california fire officials say two small structures may have been damaged by the growing wildfire still burning in the santa cruz mountains. they say they don't know yet what type of structures were burned. more firefighters and equipment were brought there. we're joined for the very latest. >> reporter: we're standing along highway 1 at scott creek. behind h me these helicopters are making nonstop runs from the creek. they pick up water in the buckets and ferry them back to the fireline. it's been going on nonstop all day long. those guys are going to swanton road. they were evacuated in the early hours of this fire. right now the fire is approaching swanton road. there are homes on the other side. so firefighters are very concerned about what might happen there. so far this fire has burned 4100 acres. it's 5% contained.

and they've still got a long way to go. there are 700 firefighters here so far. 2,400 people, residents of the city of davenport. evacuated from their homes. there are about 300 structures, residents, and businesses that are still threatened by this fire. we are in the north end of the fire right now as you take a look up there with the helicopters are going. it is being pushed by the winds in the southerly direction. so they're not just looking to protect davnpart. but all of the 2,000 residents that were evacuated yesterday. nobody has been hurt so far. this fire started on wednesday. the cause is unknown. the winds out here are gusty.

it is cooler by the water. when you get up to the elevation of davenport it gets very hot. the fire are trying to make sure the fire doesn't cross swanton road. >> the visibility looks awfully bad. how do they know where to put the fire retardant? it looks like quite a challenge? >> reporter: yeah. it has been during most of the fire. buts since we're on the northern edge they go around the back. the helicopters go around the back. they dump the water on the ba back end of the fire. the back edge of the fire. this is the northern part of the fire. watch the helicopter come in. they're not doing it south of where this end of the fire is because they can wa't. there's to no way to see where to put the water or fire

retardant. a lot of it has been people on the ground. they dig fire lines with shovels. they've got dozers in there. just 5% right now. with the winds the way they are. cal fire says that's the most dangerous thing they're looking at right now, the winds pushing the fires beyond this area right here. >> great update. out there in santa cruz county. craig, thank you so much. an armed man who try to hold up a virginia store got a beatdown instead. take a look. suspect walks in, grabs a weapon, points it at the owner's wife, and the husband tackles him from behind, wrestles him out the door. they fought for eight to ten minutes before police got there. >> i was thinking maybe something bad happen. my mother called at home. she was saying someone came in the store. and that he just tried to kill them. >> the owners say the suspect was a regular customer. the big exclusive interview.

years old when she pointed a semi-automatic handgun at president gerald ford in 1975. that gun, by the way, is on display at the gerald ford museum. drew peterson was back in court today in will county, illinois. he wants his murder trial to be moved to a new location. his attorneys are expected to ask for a change of venue at a hearing later today. they say peterson can't get a fair trial due to all the publicity surrounding the case. for now though the judge is proceeding as if the trial will remain in will county. he's asking 240 potential jurors to fill out questionnaires. peterson is a former bolingbrook police sergeant. he's charged in the death of his third wife kathleen savio and is expected in the disappearance of his fourth wife stacy. a trial date itself has not yet been set though. thousands of people lined the streets of jacksonville, florida, to pay tribute to the first casualty of the 19919 gulf war. we're talking, of course, about navy pilot michael scott

speicher who was buried this morning 18 years after he was shot down over iraq. his remains were found last month buried in central iraq. today's funeral procession included a stop at a war veterans monument and the jacksonville's sheriff office fired a 21-gun salute. eunice kennedy shriver has been laid to rest at a cape cod cemetery in a private service. her funeral mass was held two hours ago in hyannisport, massachusetts. you see maria shriver and her husband arnold schwarzenegger. shriver's brother senator edward kennedy did not attend. he's fighting brain cancer. shriver died tuesday at the age of 88. we just got an update for you on this large wildfires burning in the santa cruz mountains. let me get you updated. a reporter from affiliate ktau says there's about 700 fire fighters on the scene. they are going inch by inch trying to stop this blaze from crossing a major road apparently

now, and the biggest concern is the wind picking up and pushing the fire beyond where it is at the moment. this is the lockheed fire. it's only 5% contained, and 2,000 residents have already been forced to leave their homes. >> it's a little scary and exciting and the cats are nervous. they know something is going on so you just thanking the is place that i'm living and hoping it's going to be okay. >> now we're getting a lot of smoke that we didn't have before, and can you really feel it in your lungs, you know. >> the fire has been burning since wednesday. as you can see it's very rural, rugged terrain affected by drought and two small structures have been damaged by the wildfires as well. a man walks into a convenience store pointing a gun. he has no idea what he's gotten himself into though. how the store owners fought back against an armed robber.

last saturday, but please let me forewarn you. this is disturbing video. yet it could help explain just what caused the crash. so take a look here. you can see the helicopter. there it is, and then the small plane appears clipping the chopper's rotar blades. here it goes and then a wing falls off. this originally aired on "nbc nightly news" last night taken by a man practicing with his new camera during a boat tour. remember, nine people died in that collision, and now two air traffic controllers have been suspended by the faa. the agency says one controller was on the phone with his girlfriend after the plane's takeoff and during the accident, and the supervisor wasn't in the building as required. now the faa does not think their actions contributed to the accident, but one expert says there's a lot riding on how it handles this investigation. >> we have somebody missing in action. we have someone else who is not doing their job, so the negligence is there. the only question is whether that negligence had a role in

this accident. the faa is already saying, well, maybe it didn't but the faa stands to lose millions and millions of dollars and the taxpayers do if the faa is wrong. >> a source also tells us the controller who was put on leave is a longtime employee. he and the supervisor could face disciplinary actions including being fired. an armed man who tried to hold up a virginia store got a beatdown instead caught on tape, of course. look at this. the suspect walks in, points his weapon at the owner's wife and there's the husband tackling him from behind and then wrestled him out the door. they actually fought for ten minutes before police got there. >> i was thinking maybe something bad happened. my mother called at him and he was saying someone came in the store and that he just tried to kill like them. >> the owner says the suspect was actually a regular customer. i think he should be out of the nfl all together. >> i think it is awesome,

well, a rhode island mother accused of strangling her 8-year-old daughter to death has been arraigned on one counter of murder. that little girl was confined to a wheelchair, but police haven't said why. now the mom, 36-year-old k kimberley frye, didn't enter a plea during yesterday's hearing. she was ordered held without bail. police say the mother strangled their daughter in their home on monday and the girl's father

found her unresponsive in the bed the next morning. wednesday police issued a warrant for frye's arrest and police haven't indicated a motive, but they are expected to hold a news conference a little later today so we'll keep our eyes open for that. meanwhile, a pennsylvania couple is accused of forcing a 6 and 9-year-old to fist fight while they watched. police say the boys told them their mom's boyfriend said the fights were training to toughen them up. police say the boys were forced to fight about 20 times and were smacked if they refused. now the couple was arrested yesterday charged with child endangerment and simple assault. the couple has been under investigation since the boy's natural father who noticed bruises had them treated. olympic gold medalist michael phelps is okay after a car accident last night. he and two of his passengers were not hour the -- were not hurt but the driver of the other vehicle was shaken up quite a bit and went to the hospital as a precaution. they do report that she was at fault, but they haven't said whether they have issued a citation. phelps' black escalade that you

see there collided with that vehicle around 9:00 eastern last night and police say alcohol was not a factor in this accident. all right. a bit of a choppy week for stocks with a slew of mixed economic reports affecting trading today. how did wall street wrap up the week? apparently some welcome news about salaries. oh, do tell. >> reporter: well, first let's talk about the markets. unfortunately, the bad news first. stocks sold off today as a pair of economic reports said the threat of a major bank failure weighed on investors. colonial bank which is a pretty sizable regional bank with 355 branches in five southern states is said to be on the brink of collapse, but dow jones is reporting rivaled bbv & t will buy the bank and deposits. dragging down prices prices at the consumer level came in flat over the month but over the past year prices tumbled more than 2%

marking the biggest annual drop since 1950 mostly due to plunging energy prices. and a preliminary reading showed a decline in consumer sentiment in august. let's go ahead and take a look at the numbers from today. the dow industrials fell 76 points ending at 9,321 and the nasdaq lost over 1% and the broader s&p slipped 8 points, and in a sign that the employment picture could be improving. consulting firm watson wyatt says the percentage of employers who will reverse pay cuts jumped to 44s from from august, up from 30% just two months ago. the report surveyed 200 big employers and found that one-third of the companies plan to unfreeze salaries within the next six months. good news. >> that is good news. we'll take it when we can get it. have a great weekend. >> you, too. >> sure. you know, hundreds of tiny sky divers, look at this, floated down over downtown kansas city this morning. the paratroopers are actually gi joseph. this year the action figure turns 45. there they go.

out everybody so polygraph was basically a normal process. >> hasanni campbell is 3 feet tall. he weighs 30 pounds and his leg braces with decorated with a spider-man design so please keep your eyes open there. health care reform continues to be the hot button issue, of course, for president obama's administration. lawmakers in a lot of states are facing tough questions from a lot of frustrated people at local town hall meetings, so with so many facts and myths about the issues, you're probably going what's really being proposed? i don't get it. cnn.com's catherine calloway might have an answer for you there. hi, or at least a place you can go. >> a small part of the answer. the town hall meetings are going so long, but one thing is for sure it's a very passionate issue and actually, christi, this idea of a government-sponsored type of health program has been around for a long time. i just want to bring your

attention to some of the time lines information that we have out there now on cnn.com just to show you just how old it is. in fact, back in 1912 president roosevelt called for a universal health care coverage, and, of course, that did not -- that did not pan out. even in 1943 franklin roosevelt tried for a compulsory national plan. that legislation defeated. in 1965 johnson was able to get signed the medicaid and medicare program, but in '79 president carter tried another national health plan. that didn't get through as well so you can see the issue has been around for some 100 years. it's very complicated, and as we're seeing in this town hall meetings, people are very passionate about their health care coverage. >> absolutely. looking at what president obama is proposing, i mean, what are some of the main sticking points of his plan? >> people concerned about losing their insurance and money is what it comes down to, but

specifically the government-sponsored health plan would actually compete with the private insurers, and that has some people, some republicans, some concerned that people who have coverage now would lose their coverage, and then, of course, there's the idea that if you mandate that someone has health care coverage, somebody has to pay for it, and there's 46 million americans right now who are uninsured, so who is going to pay for the coverage of those people who are uninsured? where does the money come from? one of the problems is trying to decide who is rich, who is rich enough to help pay the extra tax. right now some of the legislation says anyone who makes individually more than $280,000 a year and a family bringing in more than 350,000 a year, that may actually be moved up to a higher number. another sticking point, of course, is just how involved should the government be in managing these private insurers and regulating who is covered and who is not.
